About Us

In 2007 the new owners of Green Hill began extensive renovations which were completed (mostly!) in March 2008. The new building was built by local craftsmen using a combination of wood and stones to create a very light and airy open plan space which has amazing views of the rainforest. The guest rooms at Green Hill were built in September 2008 and are nestled amongst the treetops on the hill behind the restaurant. The trees are often visited by long tail macaques (close your doors and windows!) and Thomas leaf monkeys (check out their haircuts) .All rooms have:

  • Large balconies with brilliant views of the rainforest
  • Comfortable beds with mosquito nets (beds made in situ by local craftsmen from black bamboo)
  • Individually designed bathrooms with ...a view of the rainforest (western style toilet)
Who we are (the Green Hill Family)
Mbra Mbra : was born and raised in Gotong Royong, the village next to Bukit Lawang so he knows the forest here like the back of his hand. He has been a forest guide for many years and also worked as a field guide for an orangutan research project.

Andrea
Andrea: In her former life Andrea worked as a biomedical scientist and as a UK government scientist. Following various volunteer projects in Borneo and Sumatra and obtaining a MSc in Primate Conservation she  is Green Hills in house conservation scientist!
Kendar

Kendar : Is usually found in the kitchen cooking up a storm. Be it potato rending or pasta with spicy tomato sauce his cooking is awesome. Occasionally he goes trekking (wearing crazy boots) and has a mean line in ‘magic tricks’ to keep you entertained round the campfire.

Amen

Amen: (aka Min or many many Min) is a registered forest guide and has been a field assistant for an orang-utan research project. He has many skills (cooking, guitar playing, bongo playing, philosophising etc) and can be seen here spotting a wild orang-utan (really)!

Rengo

Rengo: A general man about the place , his nickname is 'the tazmanian devil'. Rengo is your man if you need someone to play pool with, show you where to go swimming, help you sing along with the guitar...out of tune!

Things to do at Green Hill

Pool Table - Book Swap - Art Gallery - Teach English to local kids - Live Music Play Guitar or Bongo - Chillout Zone (great views, hammocks and cushions etc)

“Conservation Corner” We have a collection of photos, nature books, factsheets, scientific journal articles etc. Why not learn a bit about the amazing wildlife of GLNP over a beer or fruit juice. The wall is decorated with orangufacts and collages made by next doors kids. It’s a work in progress so come along and draw/paint/ a rainforest inspired picture for our gallery! (see orangutan and wildlife webpages for further info)

Green Hill is also a great base to explore the local area:

  • It's a short walking distance to other cafes and guest houses - check them out.
  • Swim in the beautiful Bohorok river (ask us to show you the best spots)
  • Join in a game of football down at the camp ground, every day 4 - 6pm ish
  • Try local fast food at a 'Warung ' (food stall)
  • Go shopping and buy a souvenier at one of the gift shops down river
Food and drink

From the restaurant you can enjoy the river and rainforest views while relaxing with a cold beer, fresh tropical fruit juice or perhaps the Green Hill special milkshake (fresh coconut with chocolate sauce and sprinkles). All our food is freshly prepared to order using local ingredients and we have a good selection of both western and Indonesian dishes. Our pasta with spicy tomato sauce and fresh basil is the best in Bukit Lawang and goes perfectly with a glass of red wine (yes, it is possible to get wine from Medan…and parmesan cheese!).
